The argument all bare

The caduceus leaned against the wall beside

the door, forgotten there, as if it had been left

by chance, then overlooked, and stayed.

Its axis—tall rolled cardboard—was a painted gold,

thin gilt through which gray fibers showed,

and curled around it, in a double weave, two

snakes, one blue, the other red, papier-mâché,

covered with a high sheen paint, so when

it caught the swaying light, they seemed to writhe.
